This free telc A1 Modelltest lets you practise the Start Deutsch 1 exam online, in the exam format. Start Deutsch 1 was developed jointly by telc and the Goethe-Institut, so telc Deutsch A1 and Goethe-Zertifikat A1 are the same exam with the same tasks. This practice test fits whichever one you book.
All four sections are ready below: Lesen and Hören with one task for each part (audio included), the Schreiben form, and the writing and speaking tasks as they appear in the exam. You see the right answers as soon as you check. What's in the A1 exam (Start Deutsch 1)?
- Lesen3 parts, 15 tasks: two short messages (richtig/falsch), choosing the right website or advert for a situation (a or b), and everyday signs and notices (richtig/falsch). Shares a 45-minute block with Schreiben.
- Hören3 parts, 15 tasks, about 20 minutes: short conversations with picture answers (heard twice), announcements (richtig/falsch, heard once) and short messages with a/b/c answers (heard twice).
- Schreiben2 parts: fill in a simple form with five pieces of information, then write a short message of about 30 words covering three given points.
- SprechenA group exam in 3 parts: introduce yourself, ask and answer questions with word cards, and make and respond to requests with picture cards.

Yes. Start Deutsch 1 was developed jointly by telc and the Goethe-Institut: telc Deutsch A1 and Goethe-Zertifikat A1 have the same parts, tasks and scoring. Only the name on the certificate depends on where you take it.
This practice test is online rather than a PDF: you do the tasks here and see the answer straight after checking, with the audio built in. Official practice tests in PDF form are available from telc and the Goethe-Institut.
The raw points are scaled to 100, and you pass with 60. There is no minimum per section, so a stronger section can make up for a weaker one.
Start with Lesen, where you can work at your own pace, then move on to Hören, where Teil 2 plays only once. Practise reading the question before the audio starts, because at A1 each question asks for one detail.
