German Language Exams
Choose your exam and start preparing
Germany requires a certified language exam for citizenship, permanent residence, university admission, and many professional qualifications. The right exam depends on your goal: TELC Deutsch B1 and Goethe-Zertifikat B1 are the most widely accepted for immigration purposes, while the DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is taken as part of the official integration course. For university studies, TestDaF is the standard at the B2–C1 level. All exams test reading, listening, writing, and speaking — but they differ in format, difficulty, cost, and where they are offered.

Frequently Asked Questions
For German citizenship (Einbürgerung), you need at least a B1 certificate. The most commonly accepted exams are TELC Deutsch B1, Goethe-Zertifikat B1, and the DTZ (with B1 result). All three are equally valid for the citizenship application.
The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is generally considered the most accessible because it tests at the A2–B1 range — you can still pass with an A2 result for certain purposes. Among the pure B1 exams, TELC Deutsch B1 is often seen as slightly more practical and affordable than Goethe-Zertifikat B1.
Both certify the same B1 level and are equally accepted for immigration purposes in Germany. TELC B1 costs €190–240 and is considered more practically oriented. Goethe-Zertifikat B1 costs €250–270, is offered worldwide, and has more international recognition. For citizenship or residence permits in Germany, either is valid.
The DTZ is designed as the final exam of the integration course (Integrationskurs). It is not offered as a standalone exam for independent registration. If you need a B1 certificate without attending an integration course, choose TELC Deutsch B1 or Goethe-Zertifikat B1 instead.
Most German universities require TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) at the B2–C1 level. You typically need a TDN 4 in all four sections. Some universities also accept the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) or Goethe-Zertifikat C1/C2.
Not sure which exam?
Most learners aiming for German citizenship or a residence permit choose TELC B1 — the most widely accepted and affordable option.
