How to Get Your Certificate
Check if you already have proof
Review what you already have: DTZ certificate from integration course, German school diploma, or existing B1 certificate. Many applicants already qualify.
Tip: Check your DTZ result carefully—it must show "B1" explicitly, not just "A2."
Assess your current level
If you need to take an exam, honestly assess your German level. B1 requires understanding main points of clear standard speech, producing connected text, and describing experiences.
Choose your exam
TELC B1 is recommended for most applicants: more exam dates, more locations, faster results. Goethe B1 is also excellent but fewer test centers.
Tip: TELC B1 and Goethe B1 are equally recognized for citizenship.
Prepare systematically
Allow 2-6 months depending on your starting level. Focus on all 4 skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking. The speaking section trips up many candidates.
Tip: Practice the speaking section with a partner—it is done in pairs.
Register for the exam
Book 2-4 weeks in advance. Bring a valid ID to the exam. Results arrive in 4-6 weeks.
Submit with your citizenship application
Include the original certificate with your Einbürgerungsantrag at your local Einbürgerungsbehörde. They will keep a copy.
