Step by Step to the Certificate

1

Get your B1 certificate

You need German at B1 level, usually proven with a certificate such as telc Deutsch B1 or DTZ. Book a date with an exam centre in or near Bonn early.

2

Book the citizenship test

Choose one of the five test centres on the BAMF list for Bonn and ask about dates. We could not confirm which centres currently take registrations from people outside an integration course, so ask the centre before you register. The fee is €25.

Tip: BAMF marks the tests centrally. Its naturalisation page shows how far marking has got.

3

Run the Quick-Check and create a BundID

The free Quick-Check comes before the online application. For the BundID account, a username and password are enough.

4

Apply online

Submit the application through the shared online service for Bonn. The city asks you to use the online route rather than paper.

Tip: The city advises against applying if you cannot currently support yourself without public benefits. The law has exceptions, for example if you work full-time and did so for at least 20 of the last 24 months; see our requirements guide.

5

Wait without status enquiries

Applications are processed in order of receipt. The city does not answer status enquiries, and an expiring document or travel plans do not move you up the queue.
