war & hatte: the past of sein and haben

With sein and haben, people usually use the simple past, even when speaking: Ich war krank. Ich hatte Fieber. ich and er/sie/es are the same; du adds -st, ihr adds -t, and wir and sie/Sie add -en (waren) or -n (hatten).

The rule

For the past of sein and haben, use war and hatte plus the person ending.

How to spot it

A time word like gestern or früher tells you to use war or hatte, not the present.

The endings

Examples

  • Ich war gestern krank.
  • Die Kinder waren gestern im Kino.
  • Gestern hatte ich Fieber.
  • Hattest du gestern Abend Zeit?

A common mistake

Letzten Sommer wart wir am See.
Letzten Sommer waren wir am See.

The incorrect form is wart. wart is for ihr; with wir: waren.
