W-Fragen: Wo wohnst du?

A W-question starts with the question word, then the verb: Wo wohnst du? Warum lernst du Deutsch? Use wo to ask about a place and wohin to ask about a direction.

The rule

A W-question starts with the question word (position 1), then the verb (position 2), then the subject. Wer or was can be the subject.

How to find it

Look at the reply:

The reply is …Ask with
a place (In der Stadt.)wo
from where (Vom Arzt.)woher
a direction (Nach Hause.)wohin
a time (Um neun Uhr.)wann
a reason (Es regnet.)warum
a person (Meine Schwester.)wer
a thing or an action (Ein Buch. Ich lese.)was
how, or a name with heißen (Mit dem Bus. Max.)wie
an age (Sieben.)wie alt
an amount (Zwei Flaschen Wasser.)wie viel
a number of things (Drei Zimmer.)wie viele

Verb in position 2

Examples

  • Wo wohnst du?
  • Wann beginnt der Kurs?

  • Wohin fährt der Bus?

A common mistake

Wo gehst du jetzt?
Wohin gehst du jetzt?

The reply Nach Hause is a direction, so the question word is Wohin, not Wo.
