The rule
In a German statement the verb is always in position 2. When a time or place comes first, the subject comes right after the verb.
How to find it
Count the parts: position 1 can be the subject or a time or place part. The verb is always the second part.
Verb in position 2
| Position 1 | Verb (position 2) | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Ich | koche | Nudeln. |
| Heute | lerne | ich Deutsch. |
| Am Bahnhof | kauft | sie eine Fahrkarte. |
| Bald | haben | wir die Prüfung. |
Examples
- Ich koche Nudeln.
- Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
- Am Bahnhof kauft sie eine Fahrkarte.
- Bald haben wir die Prüfung.
A common mistake
Im Garten der Junge spielt Fußball.
Im Garten spielt der Junge Fußball.
With Im Garten first, the verb spielt comes next, then der Junge. Not der Junge spielt.
How to remember it
Count parts, not words: am Wochenende is one part. Position 1 can change, but the verb stays in position 2.
