The rule
They join two Hauptsätze or two words and take no place. Each Hauptsatz keeps its word order: in a statement, the verb in position 2.
Which word?
Ask what the second part does: add, contrast, choose, give a reason, or replace?
| Word | The second part | Example |
|---|---|---|
| und | adds something | Ich koche und Tom backt auch. |
| aber | a contrast | Ich bin müde, aber ich lerne. |
| oder | a choice | Tee oder Kaffee? |
| denn | a reason | …, denn ich bin krank. |
| sondern | replaces what nicht / kein says no to | nicht Tee, sondern Kaffee |
The verb stays in position 2
| … | Konjunktion | 1 | Verb · 2 | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Die Wohnung ist klein, | aber | sie | ist | sehr hell. |
| Ich schreibe eine E-Mail, | denn | das Telefon | ist | kaputt. |
| Max spielt Fußball | und | Luisa | schwimmt | im See. |
Examples
- Die Wohnung ist klein, aber sie ist sehr hell.
- Ich schreibe eine E-Mail, denn das Telefon ist kaputt.
- Max spielt Fußball und Luisa schwimmt im See.
A common mistake
Ich nehme nicht die Banane, aber den Apfel.
Ich nehme nicht die Banane, sondern den Apfel.
After nicht, use sondern (but rather) to replace, not aber.
