The rule
A yes/no question starts with the verb (position 1), then the subject. Answer Ja, Nein, or Doch to contradict a negative question.
How to answer
The verb is first. To say yes to a question with nicht or kein, use Doch.

| Kommst du? | yes | Ja |
| Kommst du? | no | Nein |
| Kommst du nicht? | yes | Doch |

Doch, ich lese das Buch.
(the question: Liest du das Buch nicht?)
